Strange problem with stereo jack

Postby Russ15 » Mon Aug 29, 2011 10:12 pm

I am finishing up both the jack input boards from the all in one v1.8 boards synthex put together. I ensure before soldering that all traces work properly and then check again after. After soldering I only have one issue and it deals with one of the jacks. I have attached an image to show exactly where the problem is.

Basically without solder on the red pad the trace works properly to the other soldered pad (marked blue).
When the multimeter is touched just to the leg of the stereo jack coming through it reads only as ground and does not properly interact with the pad it will be soldered to?
Once soldered, the pad reads properly on its trace but also with ground (which I assume it should not do)

I tested the other board which has the same exact trace and both soldered pads behave correctly.

Is this a bad stereo jack or any ideas for a possible solution?

Thanks

Sounds like you have a small short somewhere. Look over that trace with a magnifying glass and make sure it doesn't have any minute bridges to ground. Also clean the board really well with soap and water and a toothbrush to get all of the flux residue off of it. Dry it well before you put power to it.

Hey Jman... ya I believe it was exactly that... I desoldered the jack, made sure nothing was wrong with it, and resoldered it. I also found that the leg parallel to the one causing me problems seemed to be shorting (microscopically of course) with a connection to ground. Soldered back one leg at a time and did a continuity check...everything checks out now! Thanks for your response though I appreciate it! 8-)
