Believe it or not, but full VU meters indicate that you still have soldering problems on the board or incorrect/faulty parts.

:? The 6N138N had a small short on it, that wasn't there before, wierd. Anyways that's fixed the full VU meters problem, the LCD and menu, buttons etc. function fine, but I believe there is another problem on the either the digital board or the analogue board that's causing the VU meters to turn on/off but only by a tiny amount. It looks like all the pads are being triggered by something that's causing them all to rise only just above underscore symbol, on and off

The LED shows no MIDI activity, and I haven't connected a hit hat pedal.
I checked for shorts/breaks on the analogue board, and hopefully the 4851's are functioning correctly.
Guess I'll look harder, in the meantime for faulty components or breaks/shorts.

Going to bump this to post my success in getting everything to work :)
I cleaned the digital board, reprogrammed atmega, just did a test by connecting a piezo to the analogue board, and it works fine. I still have no idea what the problem was, but it's gone now, so it doesn't really matter 8-)

Anyway I'm off to solder up the DIY E-drum pads and hi hat pedal :D
