DIY kit (someone already used Frankenkit:))

Postby The_JinJ » Tue Mar 22, 2016 1:38 pm

Thought I'd try out a new design for a dual zone snare to replace the crossbeam design that I could never get the rim to fire reliably on.
Based on a design I saw somewhere a while ago, it's a 1st draft and I'll see how I can improve it. It uses cross beams from all lugs with central platforms isolated to minimise crosstalk.

Working really well with the usual tweaking in MD, with rubber rim silencer I can get those rim shots and have a low threshold on the head :)

Couple of images, sounds soon!

Now on with the rest of the kit!

Completed the Tom's and bass, slight changes to the design as I went along. Hall sensor for hi hat works well.
I have a Roland PD8 which I may use for the ride and a couple of single zone Alesis pads I could use for crashes.
The Tom's are dual zone so plenty of scope for more cowbell ;)

Couple of images, excuse the messy room :)

Thanks, works quite well, I was surprised.

I made a rough break down of the costs to convert. If sourced in bulk and from more carefully selected sources I'm sure they could be reduced a fair bit:

M6 Roofing bolts 80mm x 3 £0.36
M6 Nuts (hex/locking) x 70 £0.67
M6 Washers (plain/spring/penny) x 40 £0.52
M4 Screws 20mm x 5 £0.26
M4 Washers x 5 £0.35
L Brackets x 15 £1.28
Conduit box lid x 1 £0.07
Piezo 20mm x 1 £0.19
Piezo 35mm x 1 £0.19
Foam (Yoga brick) x 0.25 £0.02
Double sided foam tape x 0.03 £0.02
1/4" Jack x 1 £0.30
Mesh head x 1 £10.00
MDF offcut x 1 £0.00
Wire 0.3 x £0.01

Total per Drum £15.35
Total for Snare & Toms £61.40

Rehoused the MD and moved to the garage :/

Although it involves eternal MD tweaking, happy with settings at the moment using Drumgizmo and SFZ via LinuxSampler.
