[Solved]Problems with increasing Latency when hitting harder

Postby SigiZ58 » Wed Mar 01, 2017 10:54 pm

Hi,
since almost two weeks I am a proud owner of a 56 Input Megadrum built by Dmitri.

Honestly speaking, I was several times near on giving up, but started again almost every day searching in the Forum.

I followed the guides setting up with at first High Level and then the following settings described elsewhere.

Until now I am only using a Roland Mesh Pad PD-128S and a PD-125, as I am not really happy with the results I got until now.

Main Problem is, when I make soft and soft-medium hits (until velocity around 64 I guess) it is aceptable. But the harder I hit, the more I feel a latency.

At first I thought, it was related to Audio Driver, but that is not the reason. I have a Roland TD-10 Module. here all is fine with triggering and no latency.

Even when I go with the midi out from Roland in my soft synth, there is no latency.

My last check was: Pad to Roland connected, Rolands Midi out to the Midi-In of Megadrum and from there to the softsynth. No latency.

But as I say, it is a special latency as it grows the louder I hit (on Megadrum) . I have a thousands combinations tried out, always starting at the beginning with Auto high Level, threshold dyn Level/time. I even loaded the pd-105 sysx file from hellfires mega drum library. But this leads to continuous false triggering (Triggers without hitting the pad)

I had so big hopes but now I start to think about giving up and use some chained Roland modules, as even my old "weak and unsensible" TD-10 works out of the box with my pads.....

ideas where this increasing latency can come from ?

It will be hard to guess all those thousands combinations. Please post a screenshot of particular settings for a particular pad. And how much of latency do you get with this combination - 1ms, 10ms, 100ms?

A couple more things:
1. When you set Curve on the pad to MaxCustom12, do you get noticeable latency with soft hits?
2. Do you get noticeable latency if you scroll to one of curve editing screens in the Menu (e.g. to CurveLinearC) so that the LCD doesn't show hit bars?

Hi Dmitri,

here a screenshot of one of the Settings.

Only the strong hit give a noticeable latency. I cannot tell you how much. For sure not 1ms, that is not noticeable. Of course not 1000ms - that would be a second.

I can only estimate. If you are in a small bathroom and clap your Hands, the echo Comes some msecs later. This is nearest comparable example. It is a noticeable slapback. Normally I would say latency around 20-30ms. Not much but it feels indirect. Deadly for snare hits, exept you want delay or slapback :-)

with the max curve it is also there.

and - yes, when i scroll to the curve editing Screens I get noticable latency - when i hit harder

What about soft hits when you set Curve on the pad to MaxCustom12?

A couple more things:
1. You set MinScan to 60 which will force at lease 6ms latency on the input but it will affect both soft and hard hits.
2. You enabbled Positional sensing so each MIDI Note On message is preceded by a MIDI CC message. It will add some latency but it should be negligible. Again it will affect both soft and hard hits.

Can you test with MinScan below 30 and with Positional sensing disabled?

P.S: I take latency very seriously so be sure if it is indeed there I will fix it quickly. I will do measurements again tonight.

Hi Dmitri,

thank you for your help.

I checked at first the Settings and - as I guessed - there was not much difference.

But I found I must have made somewhere a mistake when I tried to eliminate the Audio chain.

I set this up just now again.

My Audio Driver is a komplete Audio 6 with ASIO on W7 64 Bit System.

Honestly - I got today the same latency behaviour with my TD-10 Module when I drove the Addictive drums.

No difference if i used midi out or chained through Megadrum. Exact this latency what I thought I had eliminated.

So I have to look into this myself. You dont Need to invest your costly time this night to investigate this.

Thank you very much for your Support.
