3.5mm vs 1/4"

Is there any reason why I couldn't (or shouldn't) use 3.5mm stereo cable like this:

instead of 1/4" TRS?

Looks like it would be cheaper to go this route and less cable and connector bulk. Is it more difficult to work with (soldering, etc)?

Well the 1/4" is standardized for all pro gear. If you don't intend to sell it ever or use commercial drum heads then it shouldn't be a problem.

Personnaly, if I had to rebuild a Megadrum, I would definately get some XLR instead of Jacks 1/4".
It's simply cheaper and easier to get some good quality XLR cables for a good price!

I have learned that it does not matter what sort of jack you use as long as you can carry three signals (tip, ring, ground). For my upcoming build (need some etching stuff and then start!), I am using some really non-standard audio jacks, but they carry a signal and I like them and that's all that matters. The only reason I would use the 1/4 inch jacks (apart from that being what is standard on other equipment) is that they have thicker cables and thus less resistance to the signals. But practically, unless you have many many meters of cable, this is not going to be a problem.

Won't matter what you're using, like the guys above said, so long as it carries a grounded stereo signal.
