Trouble with Roland FD7

Postby coralgol » Sat Jun 18, 2011 4:20 pm

Hello,

i have some trouble with my fd7. I think the sensitivity is too high. I get sometime multiples chicks and I get chicks too, if I put some more presse into the pedal (especially when I play Heel up). I read something, that I have to put a 5k resistor in the hihat jack. Where I have to place that resistor?

Thank you.

You don't need any resistor. You need adjust High and LowLevels for the pedal. Search the forum for FD8 which, I believe, is similar to FD7.

Ok Thank you, I found some good values, but it's not perfect yet.

Is it normal, that the FD7/FD8 changes the resistance far at the end?(it's not evenly) Normally, the VU meter should show a change if I put lightly pressure on the pedal. Or do I have to adjust something?

Sorry but I don't quite understand what the problem is. Please, rephrase.

Sorry for my english.

I asked, if it's normal that the fd7 not react if put a little bit pressure on the pedal. Normally the VU Meter should show a change on the start, but the change appears first if I have pressed the pedal more. So the reaction is "moved". I don't how to explain that.

Raise HighLevel until it reacts to light presses.

Coralgol, It's normal that your FD-7 don't give you any change with lite pressure, it's set like this. And you can't change it. The setting screw just change the height of the pedal, but resistance begins to decrease about 1cm above the lower point of the pedal regardless of its initial height.

Ok thanks for the Info. Can you please post your settings of your fd7 Sylv1co?

You probably have to change something. I used "custom curves" to make a curve that made my hall effect hi hat pedal give "linear" behavior. Initially it behaved like your description. I assume that is what you are looking for? For your hi hat pedal signal to change in proportion to how your foot operates it? i.e. when your foot is halfway down, the v.u. meter is right in the middle and when your foot is all the way down, the v.u. meter is all the way down, and when your foot is off, the v.u. meter is all the way up? Then when you push your foot down, the v.u. meter goes down at the same rate your foot goes down and goes up at the same rate your foot goes up? The way I did it was to follow Dmitri's directions and get the max & min levels that your pedal sends out. The easy way I used was the "midi log" window in mdm. Then set high & low levels in megadrum. Once you get high & low set, then use the "pads extra" window in mdm to find the best curve. There is a little trial & error involved, but you can get a "non-linear" pedal to give "linear" behavior. p.s. easiest way is to set pedal to "pot". This way all cc data isn't in the way while you are looking for high & low values.

Yes, but the resistance of the FD7 don't change at all until you reach about 1cm above the lower point. So you should make everything in the module, it will not change anything. That said, it's the same on a Roland module using the FD-7. On my TD-10, I find the HH course a bit short, I would prefer have 1,5cm or 2cm, best would be to have the possibility to set the course lenght.
It's possible to reduce a course with a variable resistance in parralel, but unfortunately it's impossible to increase it.

Unfortunatly I can't since I not use my FD-7 with megadrum. But if it work on a Roland it must work as good on megadrum. HiiHat on megadrum is, in my opinion, one of the best feature it possess.

There's only one way to increase the action length of FD-7, but it's technically very difficult to do :
FD-7 works with a kind of rubber hammer that press a FSR sensor. Try to put some foam on the hammer, it will begin to press on the FSR earlier (and then begin to decrease the resistance earlier). Just an idea, I haven't made any try.
