Failed Update

Postby Thurston » Tue Mar 17, 2009 12:17 am

Today I finally finished wiring up my Megadrum to all the input jacks, buttons & LCD and enclosed it all in a black project box. To test out my first DIY drum I plugged into Jack 7, which corresponds to the snare input. When hitting the foam cone of my drum (attached to the piezo) the box second from left on the top row shows a bar registering the hit. MCT also sees the signal. In fact, even when the drum is sitting still, MCT is constantly registering light hits. I assume this has something to do with Megadrum configuration settings, which I have not yet had a chance to go through.

While trying to figure out how to get the MIDI routed to Superior Drummer 2, I restarted MCT at which point it alerted me that a new firmware version is available. I followed the directions to update by starting megadrum with left button pushed, I didn't press up at all, and then pressed down. The megadrum LCD said to send sysex and I clicked Yes in the MCT box. I got an error message in MCT. The megadrum LCD was then stuck on the "Send SysEx now" screen so I unplugged the USB. When I tried to restart megadrum all I get is a blank screen. What should I do?

When the blank screen comes up press the right button again you will be in the boot loader. Or left button which ever it is. Instead of pressing down try and press the right button to start the "Send Sysex File" this worked for me but I had the same problem you did.

Do you mean to hold down left as it's turned on and then press right? I'll give it a shot when I get home today, thanks.

Yes that's what I mean. Although when there is no FW installed you can press the left button after its booted and it will take you to the FW loading screen. At least this is how it worked on mine :)

I'm just stating what I experienced. I had the identical problem he had. Exactly the same, this is how it worked for me. When I pressed down it would not load the firmware it gave me an error. I pressed right instead of down and it worked perfect the first time. My buttons are configured properly I wired them identical to how Synthex shows in the manual.

Unless Synthex modified the bootloader, your DOWN and RIGHT keys are swapped.

Well that's really strange because down and right work properly when navigating the menu.

As a test up and down actually do adjust contrast. So I don't know how in the bootloader down could be the right button but in the MD menu it's actually the down button? I can't really look at it right now because it's packed away as we're moving tomorrow.

I tried pressing RIGHT but had the same results. dimitri, can you please be more specific about what I SHOULD do? For what its worth MCT says my current firmware version 20081222.
Thanks

In fact I just remembered that keys handling in the bootloader is simplified so by pressing RIGHT you effectively press UP and DOWN simultaneously so there is a good chance that it registers the key UP pressed first and changes the bootloader's frequency without changing frequency on the LCD and thus without you even noticing it and since the next moment it registers the key DOWN pressed as well it will switch to 'Send SysEx now' mode straight away. And after that you may wonder why firmware doesn't work every time.
