odd extra notes?

there is a pad defined as switch - second zone of roland hi hat. .mds file attached.

Then this is where aftertouch messages are coming from! HiHat cymbal note numbers in the mds file are different from the notes in your previous screenshot and this is why I could not match them to aftertouch messages in the MIDI Log screenshot. You also have to adjust Threshold/Gain to so that aftertouch messages are generated properly, i.e. only when you press/release the edge switch.

I noticed while making this that the snare won't respond without the hi hat pedal being used - attached a midi log image. if i play the snare nothing happens until I press the hi hat pedal; after this I get several aftertouch notes of various values when the snare is hit and then it immediately stops working.

In your .mds file HiHat is set to '3way Roland'.
Is your HiHat Roland 3way or dual zone?
If it is a dual zone then you set HiHat Type incorrectly. '3way Roland' cymbals use 2 adjacent stereo jacks. In your case MegaDrum forced to think that the next stereo jack (Snare) is part of a '3way Roland' HiHat. Hence all the problems with the Snare. Change HiHat type to 'Dual or 3way Yamaha'.
If it is indeed a 3way Roland cymbal then move your Snare to another stereo jack.
Also, if you use CC 04 messages for pedal positions in your soft synth the you have to set all Pedal Semi/Half/Open/Close Notes equal to corresponding HiHat cymbal Notes. This is not the case in your .mds config.

Also - the hi hat shows up as unknown and rim hits in the visual midi monitor. Jacks are connected as follows from pad connector 1 - pin 40 to pedal ring, pin 38 (high) to pedal tip, 37 to kick ring (mono), 36(e) to hi hat ring, 35(b) to hi hat tip, 34 (r) to snare ring, 33 (h) to snare tip.

If notes come up as Unknown then MegaDrum and MDM are not in sync.

Ah! It is a roland cymbal but not a three way. This gives me a lot to try, thanks! Will report back once I've played with it a bit.

that cleared it all up! switching the hihat to dual made the snare work and changing the pedal settings as you described cleared up the rest of my issues. I've even got hi hat 3rd zone working! Sensitivity is not great but I wanted to get everything working correctly before I started playing with those settings.
