Thanks for your time and patience.
This is a great diy project but certainly not for a novice to undertake.
Although after 4 attempts I think I've passed the novice stage.
My soldering is much better now
Anyway I guess I'd better save up some euros.
Gonna go in my closet now and cry and hold my teddy bear for a while.
Peace Out!

This is a remarkably positive approach to a problem:)

Crazy Idea Time.
Do you really have to use type b usb connector?.
I know i'm grasping at straws, but I can't seem to find any other shorts on my board.k
But something is causing the Pic18f2550 to heat up like crazy.
And I think it's the USB connector
So I was going to cut on end of the cable and just solder it directly to the usb header.
At this point I have nothing to lose huh?
We like to call it Afro-American Engineering

You can use whatever usb conector you want as long as pinout matches.
Your PIC18F2550 and actually all other ICs might be already fried.

Which traces got fried - which components do they connect?
Do they terminate at an IC - if so, what are the pin numbers?

1.The long trace between the 47uf and 100nf capacitor.
2. The trace between the led and the 220nf capacitor.
3. None of which terminates at any IC.
4.On the pic18f2550 the burned trace passes by pins 10 thru 14.

I once had this issue where my pic2550 would heat like crazy and it was due to reversed polarity on the usb connector. it actually survived after the severe heating but I'd say it has a limit...
If it ain't broken... fix it until it is.

Is your design the same as the first image in the following topic ?

If not post a link to the image of the design you used, ta.

Ok, this is strange.
I actually managed to get my computer to recognize the device, and I used winpic to program the pic2550.
Tested and verified.
Since I jumped the bad traces and used a little heavier gauge wire to connect USB type B connector.
The heat went from searing to warm to the touch.
Why I don't have a clue and since I programmed and verify the pic I'm guessing it didn't fry :?
I'll do the atmega644 after I finish the cable.
Cheers!
