By now several people have had the same problem I had and all of them confirmed that this PIC18F2550 USB MIDI firmware fixes it, of course, with the required small schematic change (pin 26 should be connected over a 22k-47k resistor to the ground).

this was taken from the first post within the link you sent,

Again, read the original post/topic carefully - it's not about programming PIC, it's about making sure that the USB is working reliably AFTER PIC is already programmed.

can i just ask what you did differently to get it to programme properly without failing?

When I did it with the ICSP cable I did not do anything different, I did it as described in http://www.megadrum.info/content/programming-mcus

oh i see, i do apologise, any idea how this happens, or why so many have the issue, i tried to programme it on a vellaman kit pic programmer but with the same results, so i am starting to think it may be the chip itself.

Most didn't have any issues and obviously didn't have anything to post about. Those which had eventually solved them by correcting mistakes like wiring, programming settings, using proper COM ports and etc.

Sorry, I don't offer PIC18F2550 or any other parts on its own apart from Atmega644.
