How to connect MegaDrum to Roland's TD-12

Postby Cysign » Tue Jan 04, 2011 4:21 am

After I finally finished my MegaDrum (soldered it one year ago :D but now it has a case and I'd like to use it!) I had problems with one cable...so I had to fix it...and my soldering iron was broken. Yesterday I bought a new one and now my keypad (a friend dropped it...and that's why I had to re-solder the cable) works fine.
But I couldn't get the MageDrum to send data to my Roland TD12. As I guess, MegaDrum sends on Channel 10 (by default on my old firmware...perhaps I first should update? xD) so I activated vlink on my TD12 and set channel 10.
But nothing happens. How could I check, if it works fine?
Perhaps this tricky cable-connector from Midi-input to tha mainboard doesn't work fine? so I should reconnect it....but how can I prove this?
What else to check?

Doh! I connected it to my computer using ma Midi-USB-Port. But there is no signal.
Usually when I connect my Midiport to my TD-12 or my GNX there is one LED for power and one for data on my midiport. But when I connect MegaDrum, there is no LED-flashing for data-connection :(

Okay, I re-soldered the USB and the Midi-cables from mainboard to outpout-board.
Now USB works better (there was a defective contact before) and using my midiport I the LED is flashing when I trigger a cymbal on my MegaDrum.
I reconnected it to my TD-12 but still no idea how it works.
When I set the lower Midi-speed there seems to be no trouble. But while choosing the faster setting and triggering a signal there is a warning-message of a midi-communication failure. So there's definitively a signal from MegaDrum to TD-12. But I couldn't still figure out how to set MegaDrum as extension for my TD-12 such as TMC-6. Any ideas?

Btw: MC is "Atmega644 20PU 0808" and FW is 20090818 - it's quite old...and I'm going to update it as far as I know how ;)

edit: I just figured out, I forgot to connect MegaDrum's LED :D done!

Perhaps my MegaDrum isn't sending midi-notes to my TD-12 as I'm using a USB power supply? such like: http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-AC-Power-Supply-Wall-Adapter-MP3-Charger-EU-Plug-/220559738864?pt=Other_MP3_Player_Accessories&hash=item335a6287f0 and connect it to my TD-12 by midi cable...?

Are you using the midi-out on the Megadrum and the midi-in on the TD-12?

Okay, now I know my MegaDrum works fine. MidiThrough from MegaDrum through TD-12 through MidiPort into computer works. Now I'm able to control VST Drums.
Still need to figure out how to control TD-12's sounds by Megadrum.

Okay, when I connect a pad to Ride-IN on Megadrum, which is connected to my TD-12, I can control Ride of my TD-12. Seem so work fine so far.
Roland's support wrote that I have to control percussion-section of TD-12 as extension of drumkit. Still workin' on that ;)

On MegaDrum you must set inputs' Notes matching Roland's drum map.

Okay, since I have some more spare time atm I will finally finish setting my MegaDrum up to control my Roland TD-12.
I sent Dmitri my Chip, he encrypted the Bootloader and I just installed the megadrum644_56_20110417.bin at 20Mhz - I hope that's right. I checket the crystal next to the MC and it is labeled 20.000 (x1) while 16.000 (x2) is far away from that on the board. And my Atmega is labeled: Atmega644 20PU 0808.

For using the QuickAccess (which is "pull down hihatpedal and select a pad", right??) I need to connect a HiHat controller. Since I'm using a VH-12 on my TD-12 which is not supported by MegaDrum I'm wondering if I just could solder a button to the HiHat-pedal input and use this knob for quickaccess. Will it work?

Edit: Is there any indication if I press this button?
I just soldered a switch to shaft and tip (but not to ring) but I couldn't get QuickAccess work?!

Edit2: Since I did the update I couldn't find any settings for midi-speed. Is it detecting automatically right now? Or is there any default-speed which will word in every device-combination?
