I bought a used Megadrum. Not sure how to update it

I purchased a Megadrum from a member of the VDRUMS forum, who had himself purchased it from another guy on the same forum. The firmware is 20100301, which I think, means
there's no encrypted bootloader. So, I must either accept the old firmware, or else purchase a Atmega chip and request that Dmitri load the encrypted bootloader. Is that correct?
This is a 32-input Megadrum, and other than that, I have no idea how to know what frequency crystal is installed, or what other information might be needed to choose the correct bootloader chip. But I would like to be able to update the Megadrum to the latest firmware. How may I do this?
I appreciate the help, even if it's just a helpful search term I should have used to get to the correct answers.
Thanks,
Bobby
