Cost of minimum setup (PCB built + 8 jacks, No LCD, No MIDI)

Postby logicred » Tue Oct 25, 2011 3:21 pm

I appreciate that the whole kit to buy pre-made is £100+, but before I even start to look into building myself, is there a very rough cost of this unit with approx 8 x 1/4 jacks, no LCD or MIDI? If it's going to cost me £70+, then I won't bother looking into it and will just buy one etc. I genuinely have no idea. I appreciate that there is a shopping list, but it's going to take me a few hours to look up all the prices!

Thanks

That's about what my 32 input megadrum cost before I built a case for it. The case was the most expensive part for my project. The second most expensive part was the copper clad board etching step. That was because I had to learn how to do it and made mistakes.

It is doubtful that you will get your diy project to work without a lcd. I'm not saying that it is impossible, but I found the lcd a godsend during initial debugging. It cut days, maybe even weeks off debugging process. In fact, lcd was very helpful for tuning drumkit, dealing with x-talk, getting hi-hat pedal to work, experimenting with multiple zone triggers, etc. There are other things that I would shave costs on.

If you feel that way, Dmitri pre-built is the best way to go. It costs less than you can get the parts, it works, and it comes with a really cool case. 8-) When I built my megadrum, I spent months doing r&d and the actual assembly only took a few hours. If you don't want to spend the time looking for parts, it is doubtful you want to spend the time on all the other stuff you have to do to get a successful diy project to work.
