Trigger too hot?

So I have just started working with my Megadrum that dmitri built for me, and I think the trigger I'm using is too hot, but I'm not entirely sure. (I'm sure this has been asked many times before, but i couldn't find a definite answer)
From what I have read the first step in setting up a pad is setting the highlevel right.
I set HiLvlAuto to Yes, then hit the pad hard a few times and got a highlevel of 992.
From comments I have seen, I assumed this was too hi. ie, my trigger was too hot, so I tried putting a 15k resistor in line to cool it down. I did the same test again, and got the same result. I tried it once more with a 20k variable resistor and again the result didn't change.
I'm using a 35mm piezo with a cone centre mounted on a crossbar with a mesh head, and I'm running firmware 20121210
Could anyone give me a hand in understanding what is going on / what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks
