3Way DIY Cymbal: 2 Zones with (simple Touch Switch) Choke

Postby alexmcintosh » Sun Jul 07, 2013 1:33 am

I have a DIY Ride Cymbal, that I have wired up with two Piezos and one Touch (Capacitive) Choke
Edge = Pin 32
Bell = Pin 31
Choke = Pin 20 (Aux1R)

I can't find documentation on how the Choke should be wired? Thus, I have connected it to Aux1R (Pin 20) in hopes of using it as my input choke switch. But it appears that Megadrum wants to use Pin 31 (Ride Edge) as the Choke input and I'm not sure what where Zone 3 (2nd piezo input) is supposed to be getting it's input (information) from?

I'll just state what I'm trying to accomplish..
1.) 2 zones (ie. 2 piezos); eventually positional sensing
2.) Simple Touch Switch - Choke
I assume the MegaDrum will require two inputs for each of the Piezos and one more for the Choke.

Any help is greatly appreciated, long live Megadrum!

(Note: the choke is like the one made by kupooglop, referred to in the artical:

I already tried this solution, and in my experience I can tell you the choke works fine, but the bell and bow trigger do not work properly.

Two piezo in the same surface generate a lot of crosstalk beetwen the zone...

Maylord (thanks for the reply);
the bell & bow are working very well; I have them going into pins 34 & 32 respectively. But I'm unable to integrate the choke. I believe it's because I have the choke signal going into Pin 20 (Aux1R), and MegaDrum doesn't want to use this as the choke input. How does MegaDrum want these signals wired?

Note: I can get a signal from my touch switch choke, so that's ok. How to wire up a two zone cymbal with choke?

Choke switch must be on an Edge input next to a Bow input which is meant to be "choke-able".

I (now) have Choke going into Aux1R (pin 20). But nothing happens: when I connect it directly to SLEEVE/GROUND

My Settings:
Name = Aux1R
Threshold = 0
High Level = 100
Type = Switch
Note = 13

I've also tried changing RideB & RideE to be either 'Dual or 3way Yamaha' & '3way Roland' and changing RideE to switch but still grounding this one out to SLEEVE/GROUND still would not trigger the note that is set (note 51 / D#3)

Also FYI.. if I switch this input to Piezo, things get crazy.. I'll get constant input signals from Tom3h & RideE (I can see the meters swelling on the LCD Display). This makes no sense as these three inputs are not related?

I can get the switch to respond if I touch my multi-meter to the switch input (as this applies a small current/voltage). But this shouldn't be the case, correct? Also, the page for the '3way Roland' is blank on the Megadrum setup page.

For Roland 3way cymbal configuration see Usuful posts/links for configuring MegaDrum and it's right a the top of topics in this forum.

I looked through this (and found this earlier); I meant to refer to the 'Setting up a Roland style 3 zone cymbal' in the Documentation section, is empty.

In regards to the link you referred to, there's something that doesn't make sense to me... here's a copy of the connection description:
----------Quote------------------------
1. Plug the Bow/Bell cable into Aux1
2. Plug the Bow/Edge cable into Aux1
3. For Aux1 Head set DualHead to 3way
4. For Aux1 Rim set Type to Switch
5. For Aux2 Rim set Type to Switch
----------Quote------------------------

For a Dual Zone with Choke (2 Piezo's & Switch Choke)
Here is a thorough detail description the following (Names & Connections):

1. Plug the Bow/Bell cable into Aux1
.. .. Aux1H=Piezo (Bell, ceramic), Aux1R=Piezo (Edge)
2. Plug the Bow/Edge cable into Aux1 (shouldn't this be Aux2 ??)
.. .. Aux2H=Nothing (not connected), Aux2R=Switch (choke)

3. For Aux1 Head set Type = 'Dual or 3way Yamaha' (=Dual Head = Yes)
.. ..(Note: I believe this tells Megadrum to use Aux2 as the other source for the input, primarily Aux2R, so it's impossible to use the default Ride input as a dual zone with choke or a 3 way)
.. ..Set Note=#Edge#Note#
4. For Aux1 Rim set Type to Switch
.. ..Set Note=#Bell#Note#
5. For Aux2 Rim set Type =Switch
6. (Do we need to be concerned about Aux2 Head?)

My Results are:
Aux1H - works (Edge Piezo)
Aux1R - works (Bell Piezo)
Aux2R - doesn't work. (Choke)

I've tried many different iterations, such as setting Aux1R to switch, but with erratic results; some of which I've been able to use the switch and get a plethora of switch commands to appear on the MIDI window). I know there is the BThreshold setting which is important for 3 zone Piezo/Switch/Switch. But after sifting through the forums and documentation for hours, I just can't make sense of how to set this up for what I think is a pretty straight forward. I wish there was a detailed description of the electrical connections (most important to me) and the software settings.
Please let me know if the above settings are correct or even close. If so, I'll happily make a drawing of how this should be.

Thanks Alex.

Your cymbal's design, as you describe it, follows neither Roland nor Yamaha 3 zone cymbal designs so it won't work for all 3 zones.

Dmitri;
ok, but, could you please answer my question.

For my 2 Piezo Zone with choke, how do I hook this up??
Was my above connections correct? Close to correct? Please give me something to work on.
