Question about buying the 4851

I'm buying my stuff from RS components, but I'm a bit confused as to which variant of the 4851 muxer to buy, as I can't find one ending in N.

They'd all work, but you must be aware that they're surface mount components. I couldn't find through-hole versions of this part and so went with another design that uses the more common 4051 and a couple of diode array chips to replace the bat85s.

Neither RS Online nor Farnell have 74HC4851 in DIP packaging. Mouser has them - http://uk.mouser.com/_/N-scv7?Keyword=74hc4851n&FS=True

I'm building MD for both actually, fun and to save ££, and also because I have nothing better to do
Since I've asked, do you think it would be possible to build MD completely on a breadboard? - it would eliminate the need for IC sockets and pinouts wouldn't it?

I did it being pretty much a noob, so it's definitely possible, but you can leave out ic sockets and the like too if you make a pcb. If I were to start again I'd get a pcb made... I find it too complicated to troubleshoot with breadboard - that being said, my breadboard MD has been going for almost 6 years now - but it did get very close to blending in with the wallpaper on a few occasions...

Oh, and I'd advise against leaving out ic sockets, what happens if you need to pull out an ic that you've soldered in? They cost pennies and can make your life much easier.

yeah that's why I've already bough some
I'm definitely going with the breadboard though, as although it's not as compact as a PCB, it saves alot of effort soldering and moving components.

Doh! I keep confusing breadboard and stripboard, of course sockets and headers can be left out, don't mind me...

haha yeah it's all plug in and out with breadboards, just hopefully everything doesn't fall out
