Atmega644 replace with Atmega 1284

Can the 644 TTH be directly replaced with the 1284

In general - yes, in MegaDrum - no.

Is it a programming issue or could it be done with tweaks to the circuit board

Only Atmega644 is available for DIY MegaDrum. Atmega1284 comes only in kits/modules.

Happy to buy the chip from you and to pay for the knowledge to change it, however I do have a fully working unit which is an adaption of your own 56i board essentially slightly modified to make the tracks wider for ease of DIY pcb construction and its split into two boards. It works perfectly. It did cost more to make than buying a module from you and it wasn't to save money but more fun in making it myself. If it only requires a few mods to make it work I'm quite happy to do them, and would prefer not to be left behind on the upgrades.

Sorry, but on its own I provide only Atmega644.
