Building with less than 32 inputs

Hi! I'd like to build a MegaDrum with less than 32 inputs in order to save space, effort in wielding components and money buying inputs, and mainly because I just need 16 inputs at max. Is there a way to get there with simple tweaks like just leaving extra input circuits without wielding a jack to them or is that only possible with major modifications to the circuit? Thanks!
