More detail on parts?

I just discovered this site the other day. Very interested in building my own midi trigger and then a kit for it.
I'm taking stock of what electronics parts i have, and just want to make sure i order the right extra parts.
Eg, 4051?, that's just a multiplexer isn't it?, do i need a special one?, or would a Philips 74HCT4051 be alright?.
I was contemplating buying a kit, but relized i already had a fair few of the more expensive components
