Jemerb's Megadrum

Postby jemerb » Mon Aug 24, 2009 5:45 pm

Hi guys!

After reading for months I'm finally ready to make my own electronic drum kit.
I ordered the kit from Synthex, it will be delivered one of these days, can't wait! :D

In this thread I want to show my steps in building everything, and of course discuss problems I encounter.
I'm looking forward to your cooperation, .

I am also going to make the kit myself, poor-man-diy-style.
Tomorrow I will buy PVC tubing and joints to start making the rack.
I am not sure how I will be making the actual drums. I saw a lot of good ways online. I can not find old toms in my country (the Netherlands) for the bottom price I want, so I have a few other options:

1) I saw a great idea about using a very thick cardboard tube normally used as a mold for concrete. This is in my opinion a great idea.
2) I saw somebody using storage tins with wooden rims. Also a nice idea.
3) Make the whole thing myself with wood.
4) Buy those really cheap hand drum thingies and convert them.
5) Search better and harder for cheap convertible toms.

Now your first reaction might be 'go look at the Vdrums forum', I did so and there is a lot of useful information. It's just that here in the Netherlands (and Europe in general) a lot of things are harder to find. Anyone got good ideas for me? My budget is 100 euro (this is of course without the megadrum module).

(see attachment for rack design, it's actually the same as most other racks :P)

Thanks in advance!

I currently cannot suggest any good ideas for making an e-drum from scratch, because following one technique I thought was cool I ended up struggling with the drum's dynamic response. I've also some ideas for the rack, but I will publish those only if I get it right.

We're looking forward to that :-)

Good luck with your build. HERE is a tutorial for an inexpensive rack on my site. You may have to register to see it.

thanks guys! I registered on your forum Jman, nice place!
Tonight I'm going to search for cheap hand drums and (again) convertible old drum kits.

Good luck bro.
Might I suggest not using cardboard, I had built some handrums with it only to have them crushed by my grandson.
Most unplesant.
An old cheap acoustic drum set is a better choice.
Plus there are many useful diy guide on the web.
And you won't have to waste funds on a rack.

I built mine out of Home Depot buckets ($3.00 each) and some good birch plywood for shells that I had left over from another project. I got the wood on sale a year ago for $22 for a 4'x8' board, but I can't find any more now for less than $50. I based it on stuff I found at edrums.info .

I might post pics later if I can find the camera.

So somebody told me pipes and all that stuff were much cheaper in Germany (just a few miles away from here) and that he'd take me there to a big DIY store next week. Because I like to save every buck I can, I wait :)

Furthermore, I found a second hand drum kit for a very low price, but It's a long drive so I'm not sure whether to take it or not...

I'll keep you guys informed.

MAKE THE DRIVE!!!!!!!!!! ;) . I've been in your shoes before, went the cheap route and always, ALWAYS, regreted it. Do yourself a favour and get that acoustic set, I had to spend quite a bit more on my set to make it more realistic and wished that If I had the space I could have gone this route. This set will also cut down on crosstalk since there is no rack involved plus you will get everything you need to get you up and running, cymbals, pedals, drums and harware, this adds up really fast when buying it all seperatly. If your converting to meshheads, try to use roland heads atleast on the snare if possible and harts are good as well. I have had issues with using fiberglass mesh, solar screen and superscreen which all caused bad triggering/ghost notes, Roland heads made this all go away due to there tough material and most of all the 2 ply design, I realise these aren't cheap but they could possibly last a lifetime if treated right. It is always better to take your time and buy stuff that will make you happy in the end rather than buying something to get you by for now, it always leads to spending more in the end. I really like playing on my a-e heads as they are much nicer than trying to hit a small 8" rubber pads I had on my drumrocker to start with. I have had to upgrade to 4 10" a-e toms c/w Roland meshheads, 1 12" a-e snare c/w roland meshhead, made my rack 2x the size and added more cymbal and tom clamps, upgraded my hh pedal, bought a pearl double bass pedal, upgraded all the cymbals/hardware, bought a kick pad, all of this cost a heck of alot more than it would have to convert an acoustic set in the first place. Hope your hunting goes well and good luck on the build, Kurt

Update!!!

I received Synthex's kit, assembled it and it worked on first try :D If you live near me I'll buy you a beer to celebrate. Take a look at the pics at the bottom of this post.
Just have to say, his kit is of superb quality, and his service is great. I am waiting for the stacked jacks, piezo's and jackplugs/cable to be sent from Pollin.de in Germany.
Problems i encountered during the build: I am really bad at making those big connectors! I messed up the 24 channels connector really badly, does anybody have a nice technique for squeezing them without breaking them?
I also have some spare resistors, probably for the LCD backlight for other screens?

Update on the drums: I called the owner of the cheap drumkit i found on internet but she didn't answer the phone. I'll try again tomorrow, I know though that the thing isn't sold yet. I really hope I can obtain that thing for it will make things much easier.

picture timeeeeee
