I'm not sure about the dsPICs but I know that the normal PICs have a 4 cycle core which means they are 4 times slower than the AVR/MSP for the same clock frequency.

Basically 40MHz PIC = 10MHz AVR. Do the dsPICs have this inherent flaw?

I think that megadrum is just trigger and will be a trigger.
It's hard and expensive to add the functionality of sound.

This is an another project : MIDI to SOUND converter (for MegaDrum) ;)
Or buy a "first price" sampler on ebay ... ;)

dsPIC 30 series are up to 120 MHz => 30 MIPS (4 cycles)
dsPIC 33 series are up to 80 MHz => 40 MIPS (2 cycles)

AVR series are up to 20 MHz => 20 MIPS (1 cycle)

Sure, but it would be nice to proove you all wrong. :D

It's a nice idea, nothing else. Maybe someday soon there is a "trigger to sound" project that we can incorporate into the mega drum.

Why all wrong ?

I'll ask a couple of questions regarding sound functionality, presuming it is to be done with wav samples.

1. How much memory such functionality will require at runtime to be comparable to BFD/EDrummer/Addictive Drums?
2. What type of memory will it use?

And trying to answer both questions keep in mind we're talking about DIY where even soldering PDIP can raise serious problems for DIYers.

A PC (less than 200 €), or a laptop (less than 400 €) enables the use of very good software like BFD or DFH.
It allows for evolution and it's an incomparable sound. :D

Why don't use a cheep MP3 player with flash memory ?
Just hack the keyboard to play the good (mono-voice) song ...

I definitely agree with Synthex here. It would be cool if there were developments to have sound incorporated into Megadrum, but currently, even the sounds of top-notch trigger-to-sound modules like the Roland TD-20 are no match to the computer-based programs that Toontrack sells (BFD, DFH, EZdrummer, etc.) I personally will be using my laptop (which is my primary computer) w/ EZdrummer DFH kit whenever I drum. And just to reiterate what Synthex said, "it's an incomparable sound."

edit:
I just read the entire thread. And though I don't know much about electronics, dmitri seems to be on to something when he says that an on-board sound module would make the project less than DIY friendly. =P
