DIY samplers? Has anyone heard of that? Making something that sounded like BFD or Toontrack seems quite difficult. Even a cheap sounding DIY sampler would be expensive, i think. Anyway, I would be really happy just with a few 8 bit samples a-la kraftwerk.

dont know of diy samplers but have found this diy synthesiser.

midibox can use SID (of C64 fame) or OPL3 FM synth.

http://www.midibox.org/dokuwiki/

So if your happy with synthesised drum sounds then that would do the job.

Actually not a bad Idea! If you write a code for the mp3 player to access the flash memory triggered by the samples and let it play through the mp3 chip... It sounds like it's easier than programming megadrum itself lol!

You think much too hardware-specific.
There are processors with far more power than any PIC, ATMega 8,...

I would use a ARM9-processor. They clock around 600MHz and have many hardware-devices integrated.

But this is possible much simpler with even more power...

Just get a small Mainboard with an Intel Atom or Core2Duo and run Linux on it.
The rest is just software...

I agree, making MD as a DIY proyect has sense cause there are lacks on commercial drum triggers and there is cheapper compared with others, but making a sound module I think it would be very expensive ( for an acceptable quality it should be an ARM9 board as minnimun and these are expensive compared with a neetbook that has all the needs for MD and a sampler software)
