A few noob questions...

At least it should show you that the LCD works and you can navigate through menu. I cannot compile 32 inputs version - not enough RAM on Atmega16.

OK, great that's basically what I wanted to test, to see if its 'brains' show activity. I still have to do a few bits and bobs before I hook it up. I'll have to try it out tomorrow morning though.

Do I use the same settings in "configuration and security bits"? I couldn't wait so I turned on my desktop. First I got a row of blocks, then nothing. Ponyprog says write was successful. I have no keyboard attached either so I can't navigate - if I can see anything legible that's enough!

You should use the same "configuration and security bits" settings as for Atmega32. Did you program them? Did you select Atmega16 as a target device in PonyProg? Are you using 16MHz crystal? Does the row of blocks stay after powering up?

You should use the same "configuration and security bits" settings as for Atmega32. Did you program them? Did you select Atmega16 as a target device in PonyProg? Are you using 16MHz crystal? Does the row of blocks stay after powering up?

Yes, I'm using those settings, I selected Atmega16, I'm using a 16MHz crystal, and the funny thing is that the row of blocks was there until I loaded this last firmware - they started blinking and then disappeared altogether; now there's just a blank screen

After powering up you should see:

on the LCD for a couple of seconds and then you should see this:
"___________| "
"___________| "
