DIY Yamaha 3 Zone Style Cymbal - Edge Problems

Postby coralgol » Fri May 14, 2010 7:06 pm

Hello,

i have problem with my diy 3 zone yamaha cymbal:

On both switches i have the bell sound. If I disable the bell, 2 zones (Bow and Edge) are working good.
If I enable Bell (Btreshold) i have only the bell and bow. How i get the 3rd zone working?
Piezo, switches are correctly connected like the yamaha circuit. Why Megadrum don't recognize the switch with 10k resistor? I read a few threads about this topic, but they didn't help me...
I know that Threshold is very important, i tried various settings.

I noticed that when i increase/decrease RideE Threshold and hit the edge, i can get some Edge sounds. Also with Btreshold. But this is rare.

Here my settings:

RideB
Threshold 40
Gain 4
HiLevelAuto Yes
Retrigger 8
DynLevel 6
DynTime 32
MinScan 20
Dual Head Yes

RideE
Threshold 34
Gain 4
HiLevelAuto Yes
Retrigger 8
DynLevel 6
DynTime 32
MinScan 20
Type Switch
BThreshold 20

I Hope you can help me.

Your edge threshold is lower than your bow threshold..in my experience (on real yammies) it should be higher..

To set the correct threshold..

1) Set your bow up as normal..threshold between 15-30..make sure to set the correct gain and high level..

2) load up mct or midiox

then on thge edge settings

Make sure that cymbal type is set at 2 way NOT 3 way and that the type is set as switch..

3) squeeze the edge switch and you should see aftertouch messages being received from the MD on the midi monitor.

4) If not keep on increasing edge threshold until you see aftertouch messages.. everytime you squeeze the edge switch

5) bell threshold should be around 15-18 but adjust until seperation between bell and edge happen.

Hope this helps

hi,

i have set bow threshold to 20. bell to 16 and Edge to 35.
The Problem still exist...

If I set Edge Threshold under 35, Midiox dont receive a Aftertouch Message from the Edge Switch. I see only a message when i squeeze the bell switch.

I have no idea...

1. Measure resistance on the ring when Edge is pressed.
2. Measure resistance on the ring when Bell is pressed.
3. Step by step describe how you followed this guide. Then show threshold values you got in Bow, Edge and BThreshold. Then show how you tested the choke on Edge and Bell using MIDI-OX. Show notes you have set in Bow, Edge and BNote.

Edge pressed 10k
Bell pressed 0k
Nothing pressed 68-70k

I repeated step 7 and 8 in the guide.
Result:
Bow and Edge Threshold nothing changed. (still 20 and 35)
Bthreshold changed to 5.

Notes:
Bow 51
Bell 53
Edge 59

I use EZdrummer.

Choke doesn't work. But I dont understand how choke works in a yamaha cymbal, too. I know that the roland 3 zone cymbals have 2 switches. Upper switch for edge and lower switch for choke. So how made it yamaha?

Choke doesn't work.

Will you care to explain/show it with MIDI-OX how it doesn't work as I asked you to?

But I dont understand how choke works in a yamaha cymbal, too. I know that the roland 3 zone cymbals have 2 switches. Upper switch for edge and lower switch for choke. So how made it yamaha?

Same two switches in Yamaha cymbals wired differently.

Sry i dont really understand you. I don't wired a third switch for choke. I used this circuit:

http://picasaweb.google.ca/Kim.Tanguay/ ... 8886726466

So their is just a Bell and a Edge switch. Not a third switch for choke like in the roland cymbals.

I don't understand what third switch on Roland cymbals you are talking about and how it is relevant to your DIY Yamaha style cymbal.
