Benefits of USB via MIDI connection + minimal setup reqs

Hi all, I have an ASIO compatible soundcard, but with no MIDI inputs. Basically, I could buy an Alesis trigger @ £60 (s/h) and a M-Audio card at @ £45 (s/h) or use the megadrum setup and keep my existing ASIO card (SB Audigy 2ZS)

1. I see I can leave the MIDI connectors off alltogether. Are there any benefits/disadvantages using USB to speak to the software instead of via a MIDI cable?

2. Whats the purpose of the 'MIDI in' available on the unit?

3. If I am connecting via a PC and using the software to control the unit, I assume that I don't need the LCD either. Are there any benefits of using an LCD too? If I don't use an LCD, do I need any switches too?

Basically, I want the minimal amount of setup possible to keep things simple.

I don't see any clear advantage/disadvantage for either.

For two way communication over standard MIDI, e.g. MegaDrum manager or firmware upgrade.
MegaDrum chaining.

Buttons are required for doing firmware upgrades. LCD, rotary encoders are optional.
