Yamaha RHH-135 (Specification and Config)

Postby Andrej » Sun Aug 25, 2013 8:00 pm

When configuring my RHH-135, I had to search various forum posts for information, which takes a while to get to the
important stuff. Most of the forum posts are about problems, and not solutions. So, I'm trying to help here by posting a
successful config for a RHH-135.

And, yes, you definitely need to reverse TIP and RING when connecting it to your Megadrum module. But, once
you have done that, configuration is straight forward. I've just done that directly in the module by resoldering two wires.

Below is part of the support manual that explains how the RHH-135 works, and also my Megadrum Manager config settings, which work well
for Addictive Drums.

Got my RHH-135 working nicely with Megadrum and Addictive Drums. Here is my config.

Important: I had to swap tip and ring on input jack #1. Did this directly on the module as it was the easiest.

Foot chick, foot splashes, and other hi hat articulations are done by Addictive Drums using CC4.

Works well, but have a little bit of a hot spot right where "YAMAHA" is printed on the rubber. This is where the piezo is located.
Increased MinScan to 40, but still have it. Not a big deal, because that's where you usually hit it anyways. Other than this, I'm happy
with it.

If AD supports "Tight Close" pedal position, you can try the test firmware version from viewtopic.php?p=24712#p24712

The tight close would refer to the Closed 1 tip. (e.g note 41. You have two levels of close. 1 & 2)

Sorry, not following. What exactly should I be looking at?

I've configured AD to generate chicks from CC messages. For that it uses the "HH Foot Close" stroke type.

There's a "Closed 1" Pedal position, which is used when hitting the HH. When hitting it on the bow, then "HH Closed1 Tip" is played. But
that doesn't seem to be used for foot chicks.

If AD can generate chicks from CC messages than you don't need the Chick Threshold I added in the above mentioned test firmware.

Don't need this for AD, as that generates nice chicks and splashes from CC4.

But, now I'm trying to configure EZDrummer. Have it all working (no CC messages) except for the chicks. If this new firmware is public, can MDM be updated to support it? I love MDM for its flexibility and that I can easily save settings.

Also, as Charly pointed out, MDM does not show the proper HH Pedal value in the "Visual Midi" panel. It shows 126 for Open, but CC Message contains
Data3=0x00. That makes it a bit more difficult to set the HH Levels. Not a big deal though, just want to mention it.

Thanks Dmitri.

I'll publish this firmware version as soon as I've added support for this feature in MDM.

The settings for the pedal were spot on for me, I would have torn my hair out trying to figure out the reversed input pins.

Still working on the cymbal itself, and I have a troubleshooting question:

I am finding that I get the edge note when I strike the bell or the edge. I only get the bell note when I strike the bell and the edge simultaneously. Is there something I should immediately look at?

Solved
If you should encounter something similar, please verify that the notes you have entered in your pedal section are correct.
