Ok, will do. In a regular input, the first half-wave is smaller than the following three half waves. Is that expected or
should I be looking at modifying the pad, and if so, what can be done (cakepan+cone)?

No. If you could see only sampled levels on low impedance inputs, you would see that the signal has the same form as on an unloaded piezo but with lower voltage.

MegaDrum sees non-distorted signals but with lower voltage. What you perceive as a distorted signal is in fact a mixture of loaded and unloaded signals.

With a proper construction the signal should decay monotonously. If it doesn't then there is something wrong mechanically. I'm sorry but I have not built any pads myself.
