Configure roland KD-9 kick

Postby gonzoburns » Sun Sep 08, 2013 11:05 pm

Hi,

need help configuring my KD-9 kick.

I got nearly no Midi signal or lots of signals in a row without any kick done by me (velocity of signals in a row depend on treshold value).
I have increased my treshold value, because if I don't lots those "ghost" signals were fired from the pad.
Somehow the autolevel gave me only 140, wich is quite low, isnt it? (Without 15kOhm it was almost 200).

How can I fix it?
Do I need the Voltage divider or better without?
Does my KD-9 is maybe broken, I ordered it from eBay and had no chance to test it via any other module yet.

I'm just starting with MD, so don't know much. Maybe I missed something basic, so any help would be apreciated.

Here are my current settings in the MD for my kick input:
Function: normal
Curve: linear
ComprLvl: 0
LevelShift: 0
Xtalk: 0
XtalkGrp: 0
Treshold: 85
Gain: 9
Highlevel: 142
Retrigger: 1
Dyn Level: 0
DynTime: 0
MinScan: 10

I already used a 15kOhm voltage divider, because there was always a signal fireing from the pad.
With 15k and Treshold 85 the ongoing signal stops.

Here are my Scope from trigger (without 15kOhm):

And with 15kOhm:

1. Judging by what your scope shows, the signal from the pad is very low, only about 0.1V. And this is without a load onto an input.
2. Voltage divider is only needed when a pad is too hot, i.e. produces a signal well above 5V even when loaded onto input impedance.
I'd guess there is something wrong either with the pad or with cabling.

ok, cable was a new one and might not be the problem.
The 15kOhm is back to VH-11 and won't be used again for the kick.

Somehow i was using an sound absorbing beater from drum-tec to allow my wife to sleep while i'm using the drums lately.
Seems it reduces also the trigger signal too muc.

new scope with the backside of the absorbing beater results in:

The bad think I have to continue tomorrow some time earlier in the evening, because the kick makes a noticeable sound in the room now too

Here are my new values:
Function: normal
Curve: linear
ComprLvl: 0
LevelShift: 0
Xtalk: 0
XtalkGrp: 0
Treshold: 90
Gain: 9
Highlevel: 687 :!:
Retrigger: 1
Dyn Level: 0
DynTime: 0
MinScan: 20

This make the KD-9 work again. I can see full velocity 127 in the MIDI monitor of my Cubase.
Is gain 9 a useful value or is this input signal soo poor?
Are there any alternate settings to lower my treshold or is 90 still a valid value?
What makes my "ghost" notes that come from the KD-9 pad?

So a big THX to dmitri (for MD and for Help)!!!

Yes.

At Gain 9 it threshold 90 is ok.

What makes my "ghost" notes that come from the KD-9 pad?

By "ghost" notes do you mean double triggering?
