MIDI THRU Questions

Postby craneium » Sat Oct 11, 2014 4:09 am

search for awhile and i saw some issues about this but no real answers.

i have a 56 channel MD (STM32F), Firm- 20140809. i am using a mac book pro (osx 10.9). my audio out is a Line6 UX8. i am trying to use also a spd-sx.

goal: i get great triggering from the MD and the SPD when plugged in to USB. but i need to use MIDI Thru for the SPD. the mac only has two USB ports and one is for the MD and the other is for the Line6 (multi channel output for live performances). really dont want hub the USB, set up is almost perfect if i can get this fixed.

problem: when i plug the spd in to the midi in jack i get no signal to the MD.

what i am doing: Using Midi in jack (the MIDI pin jack with only two lines connected). checking midi thru in MDM options. selecting midi thru port as same port as the in and out (maybe this is the issue for me?). clicking ok and getting SysEx Ok value. checking midithru check box in misc setting in MDM and sending that over. spd triggering but MDM not showing any of those midi notes, drum software not receiveing any of those midi notes.

is there some more setting i should be using, or maybe a software that can help me debug this a little better. i am about 90 percent positive all wire runs are correct. just need a little direction.

When you connect SPD MIDI Out to MegaDrum MIDI In and trigger SPD, do you see MIDI LED in MegaDrum lighting up?

IT is maybe obvious but the checkbox in the misc panel "MIDI thru" should be enabled and you need to send this config to the MD.

Don't try to do enable the midi through in the options dialog. You don't want MDM to do the midi thru...

that makes sense. i was wondering why there is a midi thru option in two places. haha i was tunnel visioned in trying to get this working. yes i have no need to have MD do the midi thru. i have removed those settings. but i have been checking the midi thru box (enabled) and sending that to the MD. i also scroll through the LCD to make sure it says midi thru enabled.

but i get no signal, i have opened the box and checked the LED and it lights when i hit my triggers connected to the MD but i get no light on SPD hits. also both midi logs show nothing on SPD hits. i have tripple checked the cables that they are plugged in and in the right ports. i have tried several midi cables (new).

And you have not mixed the MD midi ports? And trying to send midi to the wrong midi port on MD. (Easy to mix...by accident)

Sorry, I don't understand. Do you want to connect SPD MIDI Out to MegaDrum MIDI In or not?

sorry for the confusion guys. i have SPD midi out- into - MD midi in.

my lost post was referring to my misunderstanding of the settings. like agr77 said i dont need to use the midi thru setting in the options window right? i only need to enable the midi thru in the misc settings panel.

i am plugged into the midi port with only two wire connections. pretty sure thats the "IN" right? i checked through the wiring i am pretty sure its right. i can open up the box and play with the MIDI IN wiring and make sure its right again, i guess.

You have to enable MIDI Thru in MegaDrum settings, not in MDM Options.

Yes, it is.

If all cables are good, all wiring is correct and MIDI Thru in MegaDrum is enabled and it still doesn't work then I'm afraid SPD MIDI Out signal output is too low for MegaDrum MIDI In. The only way to try to resolve it is to make a change on the main board.

aahhh, ok, so thats good. then there could just be an incompatibility issue here. thats a good direction for me. i can run some tests with that in mind. thank you guys.

Hey guys, I'm working with Craneium on his megadrum/SPD-SX issue. The LED in the Megadrum is blinking and changes when we hit a pad on the SPD-SX. That should mean the Megadrum is receiving the signal right? Or is the LED an auxillary circuit with no real indication of the microcontroller receiving signal from the input circuit?
