Substituting other LED lights / switches

Postby CCinBR200 » Sun May 10, 2015 3:30 pm

I just ordered the Basic kit from Dmitri and I'm excited about the build.

I plan to substitute a LED lighted latching switch for the one with the kit and a regular green LED for the red MIDI that comes with the kit. Is there anything special I need to do (e.g. add resistors) or can I just make the swap directly.

Thanks!

I'm not sure I understand the question but in any LED must have a current limiting resistor. The value of the limiting resistor should be:

R = (Vp - Vf)/Id

where
Vp - power or driving voltage.
Vf - LED forward voltage. For LEDs it's around 1V.
Id - LED current.

The lower the R, the higher I and the brighter the LED. Id must not exceed the LED's maximum current.

This is the switch I want to use if I can:

and I just want to substitute one of these for the red MIDI indicator light:

I have the LED so if I can directly substitute, you can skip soldering the red LED.

Thanks!

The MIDI LED is not soldered to the board so you can use one which comes with the kit or your own.

Thanks, Dmitri.

I'm still interested in a lighted power switch. The ones I'm looking at have 4 pins, 2 for on/off and 2 for the built-in LED. They are 3v. Is there any place on the board I can connect the 3v + and the ground pin? If not, I can live without this feature but I think it looks cool.

You'd better feed this LED from 5V with a limiting resistor of around 1K. You can take 5V from the power switch itself.
