Can i use atmega328 instead of atmega8

Postby cenkyigiter » Fri May 29, 2015 5:37 pm

Hi,
I have an Atmega328. Can i use it instead of Atmega8 on megadrum8 PCB?
And i have only 2 multiplexer. But 16 input is enough for now. Is it possible to begin with 2 multiplexer and to add more multiplexer when i need?
Thanks.
Cenk.

In short, you can use neither Atmega328 nor Atmega8.

Hi Dimitri,
As a beginnig i will try the old firmware that doesnt need protected bootloader. In the megadrum8.dip file, the controller is shown as atmega8-16pi. Cant i use atmega8 or atmega328 with old open source firmware?

First of all, MegaDrum firmware was never open source, it was unencrypted. Atmega8 was left behind ages ago due to very limited resources. If you found old Atmega8 firmware you can try it in Atmega328 but I've never done this.

Ok i see. I thought it was also open source before 2010.
Dimitri you may also consider about transfering encrypted bootloader with a software like teamviewer or etc. And maybe a server and a software which can download encryption with a uniqe code that you give to each user.
I am sure a way can be found to do it. By this way we can donate this project or maybe we can buy a licence from you and you can help us to do it without some shipping processes.

There is no way around. Protected bootloader can leave my PC only in one form - inside a read protected MCU.
