Errors in the MegaDrum Instruction Manuals

Postby Jorns Bergenson » Sat Jul 25, 2015 3:57 pm

Here are a couple of inconsistencies/errors in the MegaDrum Lite Instruction Manual that tripped me up when I assembled my MegaDrum Lite kit. I just wanted to point these things out to keep someone else from running into the same problems and to suggest that the manuals to be tweaked.

  1. The pinouts of the button and USB connectors shown in the pictures of sections 2 and 3 are reversed from the pinouts in the main schematic. For instance, the button board connector P8 in the main schematic shows ground as pin 1, but the picture in section 3 shows ground as pin 4. This caused me some confusion when wiring things up because I kept referring to the main schematic. It would be very helpful if the user manual had a note somewhere that pointed out that the main schematic connectors are reversed from those shown in sections 2 and 3.
  2. The picture showing hown to wire the pads is incorrect. The Head/Bow inputs are shown to be connected to the Ring of the jacks and the Rim/Edge inputs are shown to be connected to the Tip of the jacks. It took me a long while to figure out why all the triggers were wrong in MDM. I though it was a problem with the wiring in my DIY triggers. Once I figured that it had to be in my MegaDrum unit, I reviewed my wiring with the pictures in the manual and realized that the picture was incorrect. It took a couple of days to figure this out and to rewire all of my jacks. Edit: I was totally wrong about the pad connectors being wrong. I must have been standing on my head looking at the schematics in a mirror :-) Sorry for the misinformation.

I'm just trying to be helpful here, not critical. MegaDrum is an amazing project and I have great respect and admiration for Dmitri and the work he has put in as well as those who have contributed to the project.

I'm just getting my feet wet. Hopefully setting up multi-zone pads and positional sensing won't be as difficult as some of the posts make it seem. I've got a mash-up of Yamaha, Roland, Alesis and DIY triggers to deal with

I've updated the instruction manuals for both kits to correct buttons and usb connectors errors.
I've double checked example wiring diagram and as far as I can see heads/bows go to tips and rims/edges go to rings so as far as I can see it is correct.
Thanks again for spotting errors!

Yes, you are correct. I don't know why I got confused looking at the pictures of the jacks. But thanks for making the corrections elsewhere.
