With the new firmware, you can use a pot or a resistor-capacitor. As you wish.

Dmitri, are you sure that this craftiness works with all LCDs ?
Because you play with the duty cycle of the signal of bit7.
Do you change the duty cycle only when the LCD is not enable ?

Yes, I'm sure it will work with all LCDs with positive contrast bias.
