building a studio sampler player system

Postby gusgomez » Mon Apr 25, 2016 8:19 pm

hello group newbie here. Own a studio and been thinking about building a sampler player based around latest i7 cpu with lots of ram. I want to load this machine with some of the best sample libraries ever made like slate , oceanway etc. I was about to give up one the idea of mapping these samples with an off the shelve system like a roland or yamaha brain and just do it with midi notes through either keyboard or pads within my main DAW do to the expense and other stuff I've been reading about midi boxes when I found megadrums. I want to use an old used acoustic kit and convert it into trigger pads with mesh heads and extreme drums triggers. Marshall at extreme told me to watch out for some models midi boxes, some of them have latency issues, my question for the forum is, is there an issue with latency with any of the megadrum hardware. I need help with a lot of things, I still have not decided on and interface but it seems like some AES based interface will work fine since it has lots of analog outputs please advise me on anything at all, I'm running Nuendo and Cubase, thank you kindly

If I assume by 'midi box you mean the trigger/midi interface then you need have no concerns with a Megadrum. Very little of the latency, of which you are concerned, comes from the 'midi box' but wiil come from processing the triggered audio.

MegaDrum itself has very low latency - probably the lowest out there, see my measurements with a previous (slower) MegaDrum version in http://www.megadrum.info/forums/viewtop ... f=3&t=2079

thank you guys, yes indeed, i guess I got latency confused with convertion from library to audio outs on the interface, here's the set up I have in mind

rack mounted i7 PC
motu 24ao USB interface 24 analog outs
megadrum midi/trigger box
used acoustic kit mesh heads w/ exterme drums triggers
please tell me if I'm missing anything , Dmitri can u build me a box , how many inputs, cymbals and hats probably requires stereo triggers or edge bell and choke functions
thank you guys , sorry for not being very clear about it, just plain ignorant on the subject

What size case are you planning on there, 1u, 4u? and if so what fan.

PC i7 based single quad core LGA 1151 socket 4.0GHZ cpu in a Norco 2u rack mounted case with 4 internal low speed fans , due to the height of case I opted for a no fan cooling system for the CPU 32gigs ram, MOTU 24 ao usb interface with 24 balanced analog outs, latency on the MOTU is only about .2 milliseconds since it's only doing D to A conversion, thanks for your interest

I do, though it is getting dated as we speak! I4770 with 32gigs of ram and 2x1TB SSDs which are now almost full with samples.
I went with a 4u just to be on the safe side, but no real need. I think the trick is not to have all the usual junk that you would have with an 'off the shelf'. No graphics card, external sound, no internet and lots of things dissabled.
