Howto set levels on hihat?

Postby stefan1982 » Mon May 01, 2017 11:42 am

I am trying to set the levels on my hihat cymbal.

I did the following:
- I open MDM;
- "Live updates" are on;
- Set HighLevel to "64";
- Tick the "HighLevel Auto";
- Smashed the cymbal 5-10 times;
- Untick the "HighLevel Auto";

And nothing happens.... Just nothing, even when I do a "Get All", or when "Live Updates" are off..

Am I doing something wrong here and missing something simple?

It shows that the hit took place, with several false hits. But the latter is expectable, because the cymbal is not setup properly yet.
The HighLevel should be correctly set first...

You show config for inputs 2 and 3 but the MIDI Log is showing hits for some other inputs with Notes set 0.

Hmm, I've got lost of all the other inputs.
Only the top DIY hi-hat cymbal is plugged into the MD.

I can set the HighLevel now, which seems pretty low Imo (?), although still getting false triggering even with the recommended settings.
Isn't that strange?

(See the right screenshot underneath)

Sorry, wrong screenshot... this is the screenshots of MDm where I am getting the false triggers. (there is nothing plugged into the MD TMI, only the top HH cymbal which is a DIY cymbal)

What happens if you set Retrigger to 2?

I did as you requested.. Currently I am at retrigger set to 85, and still getting false triggers (although a lot less):

While this is a diy cymbal, I wonder is there is something wrong with the construction. I did not have seen retrigger set to this high before.

Just to see how things would go, I taped a piezo underneath a Zildjian L80 14" hit cymbal. Perhaps it need some dampening on top, or some double-sided foam instead of tape to place the piezounderneath the cymbal. And this is the result.. Do you have some advise, or is retriever set to a blue this high more common than I thought? Perhaps with other A=>E cymbals?

Well... Just to tame my own curiosity, I stripped down the piezo, putt some 0.5mm double-sided foam underneath (instead of the double sided tape) and placed it inside the bell.
Seems to be much better. High level is a bit lower, but the retrigger is set around 2-3 now without any top covering (yet)..
To be continued...

I guess you already know what is wrong - your DIY cymbal has too much "after hit" vibration.
