Edrum is easier to build than MegaDrum?

Postby dmitri » Tue Jul 08, 2008 4:06 pm

I saw some saying elsewhere that it is easier to build Edrum than MegaDrum.
I don't see how it can be true. Here are my arguments if I haven't made it clear before:

1. Edrum requires a programmer to write firmware into it. MegaDrum doesn't.
2. Edrum requires 16-22 pots and many wires associated with them. MegaDrum doesn't.
3. Edrum requires 4-6 additional OpAmp and associated parts around them. MegaDrum doesn't.
4. Edrum requires power supply associated parts like bridge rectifier and etc. MegaDrum doesn't.

I can also add that with Synthex's modifications based on 74HC4851 ICs instead of 4051 ICs allow to drop many schottky diodes and resistors. Edrum still requires them.
I can also add that with the Synthex's PCB you can build MegaDrum on one small PCB. Is there the same thing for Edrum?
I saw some saying that MegaDrum requires one more MCU, PIC18F2550. Well, if you don't need MIDI over USB you can drop it, Edrum doesn't do MIDI over USB anyway.

Am I missing something and still it is easier to build Edrum than MegaDrum?

Of course not, MegaDrum is easier to build than Edrum ! :)

For example, there are many posts on this website of very happy persons with the kit 2.7.

Being one of the few who have built both, I would have to agree that Megadrum is easier to build than E-drum.

Pardon me, I am quite new to this.

Please clarify item #1 stating that firmware does not need to be written.

Does this mean that off-the-shelf components may be used without further modification?

Is there a USB only version?

Thanks for the assistance.

More power.

No. Megadrum doesn't need an external programmer. It's ICSP.

Yes. You do what you want.
