rotating switches (pots) instead of up/down left/right type?

isn't it possible to add 2 pots instead of the 4 up, down, left, right switches?

just for a cleaner (more easily mountable) look.

and if not - will any momentary off/on switch work?

They are properly called rotary encoders. You still need buttons for firmware updates over a bootloader.
