USB problems on 2.5 version Megadrum

Postby NovaKaine » Wed Feb 11, 2009 10:26 pm

After a week of self pity and anguish I'm back at it again.
I've built the 2.5 version of the Megadrum which calls for a type B USB connector.
I'm sure I have solder correctly according to the pinouts.
But all it seems to do is heat up the IC's.
Hopefully I didn't smoke the board.
Anyone got any instructions for this I just at my wits end.
Traces and shorts have all be fixed and triple checked.

This is a very bad sign.

Do you check voltage on board ? (without ICs)

You should have checked for +5 on Vcc pins of ICs' sockets for a start.
I also suggest to read this thread: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=510 . There are several tips/suggestion on how to test the board in that thread.

I'm get 5.2 v on pins 10 and 30 on the Atmega644
On the pic18f2550 pins 14 and 20 it look like 48.2, but that can't be right can it?
Should have gotten a digital meter.

USB problem solved windows xp recognized the megadrum as an unknown device.
But the pic 2550 seems to get real hot real fast.
Is the another possible problem I not aware or is this normal?
No detectable warming on the Atmega644 now seem to be fine.

This is entirely to difficult, I think I'll just purchase one maybe I'll have better luck with this.
Thanks for your time and patience.
This is a great diy project but certainly not for a novice to undertake.
Although after 4 attempts I think I've passed the novice stage.
My soldering is much better now
Anyway I guess I'd better save up some euros.
Gonna go in my closet now and cry and hold my teddy bear for a while.
Peace Out!
