Sensor design

Postby brice » Fri Feb 13, 2009 12:52 pm

I'm about to start designing the sensors, and as you'll notice I'm not building something that looks like Drums, though hope you guys have the knowledge to help me out.

The image depicts how I'm planning on making the sensors, I'll probably use various layers of foam.

the sensor area is very small in width (about 9mm) and of varying length (between 60mm to 320mm)

Is my design totally wrong? (I'll be gluing the rubber to the metal, metal to the foam)
Should the foam touch the piezo?
I'll have quite a few of those sensors within the same casing will the foam be enough to avoid crosstalk?
What material should I use for the rubber area? (the sticks I'll be using the hit them should be relatively soft)

You mat want to try with two of this in the same case to see how it works before committing to a design with many pads.

sure will, though do you have any better idea designwise?
I'll end up with 40 of those in one casing and 21 in the other.

How does ie Alesis handle crosstalk with their performance pad?

Sorry, cannot help here. Unless it is something obvious, my approach to designing things is fundamentally wrong. I usually test my ideas in flesh and only after that draw diagrams/designs/schematics:)

I dont know if you've already post your design on Vdrums, but if not, well you MUST!!! ;)
You'll get an answer really quick for this kind of idea!
Basically every question related to the building or conversion of your instrument should be posted there. You also might wanna take the time to read some of the ideas that have already been suggested. Your design kinda looks like some that have already been suggested there!

A link to the DIY section of Vdrums (where you should explain your idea + what you'd like as a result + your drawings) :
