Rotary Encoder

Ok i have completed my digital pcb. Analogue will be completed after i have received my diodes.

Anyway. What are rotary encoder? What is purpose of them, i didn't saw them in synthex kit but they are in dmitri's schematic? Are they same as dpdt switch?

With my kit, you can use Rotary Encoder, like on Dmitri's schematic.
