while grasping at straws I modified the first line of the sysex file and changed it to F0 7F 41 F7, sent the file and the MD said
Erased, which in my eyes as bad as that sounds at least verifies that the Midi-Ox is certainly communicating with my MD

Why change the firmware with F0 7F 41 F7 ???

Please read the post with the new bootloader !!!!!! :x

"In this version, you not only need to press DOWN to erase an old firmware, but also send "F0 7F 41 F7" SysEx message first and wait a couple of seconds before sending a new MegaDrum firmware SysEx. "

First, send this file with midiox :
F07F41F7.syx

"Erased" message on LCD

Second, send the firmware with midiox.

Of course, do not touch on the megadrum between these two stages !

I did read the post with the new bootloader, and I tried sending the first Sysex message, and I did wait about 15 seconds and then sent the original intact new firmware. still nothing.

Jeffbeckib,

Power cycle your brain.

Start up MIDIOX:
..Options-> Midi Devices
....Choose the Megadrum as the output

..View-> SysEx then
....SysEx-> Configure
......Set the device output buffer size big enough for the firmware ie. 60000
......Set a long delay ie 100ms

....Command Window-> Load the file Synthex has provided (F07F41F7.syx)

[Ready the Megadrum bootloader at 16Mz]

....Command Window-> Send SysEx

Say “Don't keep the first aid box in a locked room” 5 times then

....Command Window-> Load file (megadrum32_16_32_20090306.syx)

....Command Window-> Send SysEx

Say “Don't keep the first aid box in a locked room” 5 times then

Power cycle your brain.

PS. If it has worked and you have daddy4life85 home address please destroy it :shock:

OK, THAT TIME IT WORKED.

Because you had sent a wrong "changed" firmware before !

This should be a sticky.
These are the kind of Clear instructions that many of us search for when looking for answers to problems.

No, I only did that once, after that I sent just the first command that erased the FW, and then waited about 15 seconds and sent the firmware untouched. I did the same exact thing 4 times, and on the 4th it went through perfectly.
The only difference between tries could have only been a second or 2 of either sending the FW sooner than the previous attempt, or a few seconds Later than the earlier attempt. Other than that, the steps were followed exactly Ken listed..

Anyway, I'm up and running again on version 20090306, so a sincere thank you to Synthex and Ken, and all who helped.

Just out of curiosity, didn't the original FW display the version 2.8 all in one on the LCD when you booted? Now it just shows Megadrum.info
