Which ride cymbal?

Postby userfriendly » Tue Apr 28, 2009 2:35 pm

Hi,

I've just ordered my MegaDrum kit, and I was wondering which ride cymbal would be best? I'm torn between the Yamaha PCY-135 and the Roland CY-12RC, but open for other suggestions as well.

I'd like it to be reasonably quiet, and it has to have 3 zones - and of course it should work well with the MegaDrum.

What are your experiences?

Ah three zones.

I like my Hart E-cymbal ride (16", real metal) but it's only two zone. http://www.hartdynamics.com/

I heard that Field cymbals are great and they have a three zone ride. http://www.fieldelectronicdrums.com/Ecymbals.html

I used Yamaha 3-zone cymbals before but they just didn't have great feel. The weight of a bronze/brass cymbal, size and playability are, in my opinion, worth it.

Thanks. Though, at first glance, it seems nigh impossible to find those Field cymbals over here in good old Yurp. Do you have any info on pricing?

edit: never mind, they've got prices on their website.

Hmm. 200 dollars, plus shipping to Europe, plus import duty... :? I might put that off for a while.

So far I'm leaning towards the Yamaha PCY-135, two Roland CY-8 for crash, and a Smartrigger/Alesis Surge 12" HiHat + Jobeky controller. That sums up to around 450 euros, gives me a metal-ish surface with up/down movement on the HH, and a 3-zone ride but no metal there. Compromise, compromise. :|

Or... I could just postpone buying the crash cymbals for a month (meaning I could get three of them instead of two), and invest this month's money in a proper ride cymbal. Like, say, the triple zone Smartrigger / Alesis Surge or that Field cymbal deal. Though I reckon that, service-wise, I'd be better off with Alesis over here in Europe.

Anyone been playing Smartrigger / Alesis with the MegaDrum?
